Del's original AKC breeds were Pugs and Borzoi. He and his wife, Donnelle, obtained their first Pug in 1965 and together bred more than 20 champions. He has been a member of the Pug Dog Club of America since 1970 and is a founding member of the Northern California Pug Club. Del is a "Life Member" of Borzoi Club of America. His first Borzoi Champion earned a Utility degree in obedience.
Del was active in open field coursing with the majority of sight hounds. In the early days of lure coursing, he helped with the creation of lure coursing trials (ASFA American Sighthound Field Association) and lure coursing equipment (the original was a hand crank lure). He was instrumental in working with ASFA to have AKC recognize lure coursing as an official AKC event.
In 1973, Del was approved as an AKC Licensed Handler. He has shown and finished champions in breeds from every group. He remained active as an all-breed professional dog handler until he retired from handling in 1999 and became an AKC approved judge. Del has owned Belgian Sheepdogs, Labrador Retrievers, Davhshunds, Borzoi, Whippets and Pugs. He has also been judging Australian Shepherds for ASCA [Australian Shepherd Club of America] since 1980.
Del is presently approved to judge the Herding and Hound groups plus 18 sporting breeds: Brittanys, Pointers (German Shorthaired), Pointers (German Wirehaired), Retrievers (Chesapeake Bay), Retrievers (Flat-Coated), Retrievers (Golden), Retrievers (Labrador), Setters (English), Setters (Gordon), Setters (Irish), Setters (Irish Red and White), Spaniels (Cocker). Spaniels (English Cocker), Spaniels (English Springer), Spaniels (Field), Spaniels (Sussex), Vizslas, Wirehaired Pointing Griffons.
